    i agree with tom , for me the custom medal is a no common late variant in zinc , but for me original!

      Hello all,

      I thank you for your honest comments.

      The reason I brought this thread up was because this medal was bought from a dealer as an original then sold by me as an original with fake case on estand.

      I am now just remembering it was identified here as well: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=627456

      The buyer is now calling it a cast iron fake asking for return... I will be happy to grant a return for any reason at all, but wanted a quick discussion before moving forward.

        Hi all,
        I bought this Custom medal and have chance to exam it in hand. What I can say, the medal is lead cast repro. Few questionable spots, some soft details spots, how suspension ring connected to the medal, but biggest clue that even the kid can bend this medal with fingers. How many zink or bronze medals we can easy bend????????

          If it bends its probably lead yes. Have you made the "lead-test"?
          Never done it myself but draw a line on a piece of paper with the medal as a pencil, if you can see the line it is most likely made of lead.

          But it is a good looking medal.

              Forget what I said about the lead-test. I tried a couple of my zink medals and they also draw a line, maybe its the patina on them that makes the line?

              I have only read about this test here on WAF and I guess it isnt a very accurate test. Sorry for that.

                Hello Andrei,

                Well, having it in hand is certainly optimum. Pictures can only tell us so much. So if it bends with mere finger pressure, that is definitely a bad sign.

                  Hello Peter,

                  Interesting! I have never seen a zinc badge write like a lead pencil. As far as I know, they should not do that. Maybe, like you say, it is the patina, dirt, or surface oxidation that is leaving a mark. But a lead badge should leave a dark mark with hardly any pressure, so don't press down too hard. I have also heard that some late Kriegsmetall alloys did contain a percentage of lead, so maybe some of those would leave a mark?

                    Hi tom.
                    I tried a couple more and some of them made a long line, even some of my iron and tombak medals made a mark so it was from the surface materials and not from the medals itself.

                    But does lead leave a clear mark easily? Considering lead pencils are made of graphite, not lead, I dont think i have some lead laying around to try with.
                    If it does then the test may work if its done on a clean medal.

                      Here is a side by side comparison of a known original (left) and the medal in question (right)... perhaps easier to compare when side by side?

                      Although when in my possession I did not bend it, it seemed to have great detail and the larger suspension looped looked as do the NSDAP 10s.
