    Police 25 Years in Service

    Hi,
I would like to get you opinions on this cross. I am buying it from Estand.
Good or bad? I never saw one on the pin ribbon.
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrei

I saw the sales thread and was thinking the ribbon looks strange but the embroidered eagle looks ok to me even if Im definetly not an expert in these eagles.

        Cross is fine.

I have to ask, how does the ribbon look "strange"? It's typical size, typical material, and comparable to others that I have in hand? As I mentioned in the sales thread was that it was slightly faded on the front. My pictures are also not the crispest but it certainly looks good in hand. I've also seen a number of other police long service medals in single mount and in period photos.

In the pictures the material looked like a newer ribbon, and I cant see loops.

I stole a picture from another forum member (hope he is ok with what) with what I call a "textbook" ribbon (Im only talking about the ribbon here, not the eagle).

But you have it in hand and if you say that the material is right and comparable to others originals that you have then I may be wrong of course.

I can understand what VonPeter says about not seeing any "loops" but I am pretty sure that these loops disappear with a direct strong flash... although not tested by me. So over photographs this isn't a sure way to spot a 'fake' ribbion.

As for the eagle there are many different variants of the stich - I've not seen them all so I cannot comment... But the set up and all looks fine to me!

I would have little hesitation buying from Dave.

The medal is fine, don't worry.
There is a great number of variations about the eagle, I post 2 of mine just to show 2 other different types. The frst is bigger like the one on the Dave's medal, the second is like the one on ribbon posted from Peter.

                    Police Ribbon

                    Hello,
I also have no issues with the ribbon. Here are two examples that I have.

                    Regards,
                    Jody

Peter, thank you for posting that image of the "textbook" ribbon type with loops on the edges. With your comments, I couldn't leave it alone and as a result I spent some extra time looking at this example I have had for a number of years and at first I was thinking the edges may have been worn down so I dug out the magnification glass and was still not finding a good answer. So I decided to look at a couple of other things and one was to flash the back of the embroidery with black light and some bright threads popped out at me although this could also be for other reasons. For comparison, I also tested a loose embroidered example on "textbook" ribbon that is one of small embroidered ribbon bits that are added to blank ribbons and there was a few bright threads. And as a further side note, I pulled out a 8-year police long service postwar 57 medal with ribbon and this blue ribbon was made with the loops on the end just like the "textbook" examples posted for comparison.

Secondly while looking at the back of the embroidery, a loose strand of the ribbon from the end that what was folded over exposed itself so I snipped a little piece since I was curious to see if this would either glob up or ash from heat...and it globed up.

Have to say I am perplexed by this one since the medal is good and the overall ribbon setup is well done...overall I liked it, and now the thread glow and globed heat result are making me think otherwise of the ribbon. Your further thoughts on this? Is this being over analyzed or grounds for concern? I've never dove off in the deep end of ribbons before...

Hi Dave, first Im sorry for saying your ribbon looks strange without explaning why, that was a crappy thing to do.

Normally then someone shows a ribbon like this without loops people are quick to call it bad, so I am a bit suprised over the comments here, especially since both Antonio and Jody are using looped ribbon for examples.

I found an old thread that may be of interest: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=124649
Personally I have no idea if the theories (solid wings and white backing) in that thread is right or wrong so dont chew my head off if it is wrong, I just found the thread and thought it may be interesting in regards to your eagle.

Peter, interesting thread and the white backing mentioned is similar to the one I have. Pictures below. Difficult to get the angle but I think you can see it.

Here is that other loose bit I mentioned before. Ribbon looks correct yet those few white threads in the center are a bit reactive under black light, which could be due to other reasons again.

With all those circumstances, failed blacklight test, failed burn test, the absence of loops and the theories from the other thread (about white backing and solid wings on the eagle) together makes its a bad ribbon according to me, sorry.

But I am just one guy and I hope others will join in to give more opinions.

Your loose bit however looks really good, both ribbon and eagle.
