    Hi Peter,

The medal and box are original 100%, between the tail of the dragon and lion can be seen EgaƱa manufacturer's brand.

    Greetings from Madrid.

I beieve Egana continued to make these medals into the 1970s, with several variants in markings and small design differences. As far as I know, there's no way to tell 100% if a single medal like this is from 1939 or 1969.

Scott, I recall we deliberated this donkey's ages ago:http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...+medal&page=10

It has always been something that really bugged me, not being able establish the desired era and post, '45 examples, as such. And, like you certainly say, there appears to be a myriad of variances and minor differences.

The same can also be pretty much said about the box, too. That is, there's no real difinitive traits to distinguish the examples; apart from the ''blue''* coloured ones, whcih I am of the inclinantion - literally guessing - as to being more modern. Well, that's my take on the boxes at this moment in time, as I'm a little out of touch regarding these awards.

*I think they are blue or are they green..? I'm having an old age moment!

              Kind regards,

              Marcus

Well there are at least 17 variants of this medal, and three times of manufacture:

                - Made up half of the 40
                - Made in the decade of the 50s
                - Made in the decades of the 60s and 70s

The manufactured after 1960 have not predominate brand manufacturer, and both the ribbon and holding needle are different and of poorer quality than the originals from previous years.

Those made in the 50s are to be found in boxes of white or green, and are the vast majority who are both for sale and in the various collections.

The made up half of the 40s, are accepted as original period which carry a "Diamond" under the ball of the ring, also popularly known as "delivered to the Legion Condor."

In all this there is no reliable documentation, catalogs or time, is just conjecture and theories of individual collectors, and I agree for now until proven otherwise.

                Julio.

It is interesting to note there are are WWII-period German medal bars with the MdC without the diamond under the ball...

Indeed, Scott! Very nice bar BTW! Look at the one I posted some days ago: Medalla della Campana (WITHOUT diamond) + 01. October 1938.

                    Kind regards, Peter

IMO, after researching a lot of period medal bars in Spain, Germany and Italy, the oldest have no diamond behind the ball.

                        Hi Greg,

                        A pleasure to read you.

Until now I thought the book information Antonio Prieto was the closest to reality in which ensures that they have no doubt the Spanish Civil War period is under the ball diamond.

Either way, it is very hard to believe that the large number of these medals that are for sale and all collections were made during the war.

                        Julio.

Yesterday in MB sold a ribbon bar LC with a medal of the "diamond" ...... an example of my argument.

                          Greetings.

                          Julio.
