    medal bar for review

    Gentlemen,

may I ask for your opinion.

I am very much interested in this medal bar.....

a bit confusing seems to be the "Golden Medal for Ostvoelker" on it.

Sascha Woeschler doubts this combination since he is of the opinion

that German soldiers never received a higher than silver medal.....

    Please verify !!

    Thank you very much

    medal bar for review

I copied the "Verleihungsbestimmungen" for German soldiers....:

You should post it to the general awards section.
Some closer photos from the bar would be good.

I think the medal bar is good though a photo of the reverse would be good.

The ribbon is for the Bronze Ostvolk Medal- maybe it has been switched with a gold one.

            Kind regards
            Pierce

                  Hello,

Sorry, but in my opinion this is not a legitimate medal bar of the Third Reich Period. While the assembly looks convincing, seeing an Ostvolk Decoration on a German medal bar should raise a big red flag. Ostvolk Decorations were awarded to soldiers of the Eastern Nations, fighting on the eastern front under German orders. They could be awarded for bravery (with swords) or for merit (without swords).

A German could be awarded an Ostvolk Decoration for leadership while commanding or as a member of a unit of the Eastern Nations. But Germans were only eligible to receive the Ostvolk Decoration Second Class in Silver with Swords and/or the Ostvolk Decoration First Class in Silver with Swords.
-To be awarded the Second Class in Silver with Swords, a German had to also be awarded the 1939 EK2 or the 1939 Spange to the 1914 EK2.

-To be awarded the First Class in Silver with Swords, a German had to also be awarded the 1939 EK1 or the 1939 Spange to
                  the 1914 EK1.

Germans were not eligible to receive the Second Class in Bronze with Swords, the Second Class in Gold with Swords, nor the First Class in Gold with Swords. And Germans were not eligible to receive any Ostvolk Decoration for merit (any class without swords).

I cannot emphasize enough how very very difficult (almost Impossible) it would be to find an original German medal bar sporting an Ostvolk Decoration. In 36 years of collecting, I have never seen one that was unquestionably real. Ostvolk Decorations were instituted in July of 1942 with actual awards probably not beginning until 1943. By this stage of the war, Germans were not coming home in droves to have their medal bars upgraded. To find an Ostvolk Decoration on an original German ribbon bar would be more likely (although still very rare) since ribbon bars were worn during wartime and periodically upgraded by the recipients. Medal bars were more of a prewar and early war thing, when Germany was doing well and parades were frequent.

                  Best regards,
                  Tom

Here is another example of a German medal bar that should raise a big red flag. If you compare this bar with the one that started this thread, I think it is safe to assume that both were the work of the same person.

                    Best regards,
