I agree with you that I would pass on these. Take my comments for what they are worth as I claim to be no expert on this medal but it is one of my favorites.
"Most" examples do have a ball-hinge eyelet. There are known good ones that have the ring eyelet as in the picture. The ball-hinge are much more common.
I do not like how thin the swastika and circle is on the gold version.
On the silver when you see the silver rubbed off there is usually a yellow underneath. Look at Ron's good example...
Just my two cents.. here is my Fire Cross for comparision. I have had this one posted on here before and got all thumbs up.
