Dienstauszeichnung des Heeres - für 25 Jahre - Kreuz - Kriegsmetall

I found this cross while surfing around the dealers sites.

Most of the gold finishing has faded away over the years

    Too me it looks fine.

What makes it unusual is that it is made from what's called Kreigsmetall.

    What do you think?

An unusual finish but I like it

I personally have never come across one of these made from war metal (zinc).

I recall reading that the long service medals were no longer produced/awarded after early 1940's and I think it was sometime after 1941 that zinc was introduced for certain medals such as the KVK.

I have no idea for certain if these were or were not made from kriegsmetal.
It may be a tomback example that has lost all of its finish.

This example looks well made but is there an overhanging "lip" on the jump ring?

          Best regards
          Pierce

I handled this one a while back, imo 100% original.

Thanks Pierce, Daniel for your opinions.

From what I have read about Kreigsmetall it is different from zinc because of it's makeup.

                Pierce,

Could be the overhanging lip is actually an indentation to the jump ring where it is joined to the cross?

You wouldn't know for sure unless you had the cross in hand.

The ribbon eagle conforms to others I have in my collection.

I know this doesn't confirm authenticity because a forger could use the real deal.

                Just some thoughts.

Yes it could just be the photo.

I now have this medal in hand and can say it is 100% original.

It compares with others I have in my collection of the iron and buntmetall type.

Both eagle and cross are non magnetic.

A rare edition to my LS collection.

                        Thanks Pierce.

It really quite something to have in hand.

It's hard to describe the finish. It's grey but it isn't grey if you know what I mean.

It doesn't really look like zinc either. There's no pest or anything on the cross.

Ribbon ring is still gold in colour. Probably made out of buntmetall.

I didn't put a magnet to the ring.

Here are a couple of better pictures of the cross.

The actual colour in hand is on the gun metal side.

                            That's interesting!

With the exception of the ring, is there any trace of gold finish anywhere?

Nope. All gone just like the dodo bird.
