    Nigel,

    Great looking bar!

Probably should post on the '57 site as well so all the '57 newbies like me can see!

    Thanks again!!

Sorry for the minor hijack of the thread. I enjoyed the photos of the arch and the swaz Afrika medlas too!

      Hi Marius,

Thanks for a thorough and informative thread! I do have a quick question. Often, it seems the Afrika medal has the green (Italy) of the ribbon on the left and black (Germany) on right. However, the ribbon when on a bar is normally positioned with the black (Germany) on the left and green (Italy) on the right. Any idea about the color positioning and what is correct for both the medal and a ribbon on a bar?

      Best to all!

        Hello Skyhawk

This is a very good observation Frankly I do not know the answer! When the medal is on a uniform I have always seen the gladiators and crocodile as on this photo:

...and as you mention the medal has the green (Italy) of the ribbon on the left and black (Germany) on right when the medal is on a uniform (also see medal to the right in this frame). But on the ribbon bar it is the other way around (the bar is not placed upside down). In my frame I have placed the medals so you see the arch (and where you can see the needle sewn to the ribbon) but the medal should have been turned around when worn and then it would not match. Hmmm strange...

            Hi Skyhawk,

This is an Italian medal and therefore the green should be on the left (representing Italy) but some Germans prefer to wear it with "their" colours to the left (the black).

You can see many examples in this thread: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=611510

There may not be a right or wrong way to wear this ribbon.

            Kind regards
            Pierce

                What a great thread.
                Thank you for posting.

This photo was taken by my Great-grandfather.
It should be the opposite of the relief posted by Marius.

This is amazing, a photo of Arco dei Fileni taken by your Great-grandfather and his Medaille für den italienisch-deutschen Feldzug in Afrika – what a treasure you have! Did he take photos of the inside of the arch as well?

I am afraid that this is the only photo of the Arco dei Fileni I have but I will check again.

                      Cheers,

                        Maurice:

Hi, this is the first time i've viewed this thread. The best historical narrative and pictorial coverage I seen, just great.

Here's a small contribution to your thread from my collection. Note obverse variations to the ribbon and medal.

*** in search of compatiable ribbon bars for the two 4 piece bars and the 1 OKT-DAK 2 piece bar.

As I thought - that's the only photo I have.

Wow Philipp, great photo and it is interesting to see the colors of the left side of ribbon. I need to go look at all of mine!

                            Thank you, Scott

                              Hi Philipp,

Great photo of your grandfather and the arch. The medal is amazing as you know it is his. Could you share any information about your grandfather's service and maybe when his photo was taken?

                              Thank you!

                                Hi there,

the photo I have posted does not show my great-grandfather but a very close/good Kameraden of him.

Please see below a portrait photo of my Great-Grandfather of the early days in Afrika.
