    Ostvolk 2nd Class

This is my new Ostvolk 2nd Class I believe.. I literally found this one today while going through a set of Japanese Medals I bought a while back.

I believe this is real but I don't know much about this award...

    Any inputs would be great.

    Thank you, Scott

    Hello Scott,

That looks like an original, non-rope type, flatback variation. It was probably made by Rudolf Wächtler & Lange of Mittweida. If you check the suspension ring, you might find it marked with the number '100'. This variation is not seen too often.

    Best regards,
    Tom

      Tom,

You nailed it! there is a 100 on the suspension ring! I tried to take a picture but I haven't mastered the close up yet!

thank you for sharing your knowledge...

It feels good to have a unique one!

      Thank you,
      Scott

I don´t know if you remember the non rope verus rope discussion some years back on the forum. Some collectors was of the opinion that the non roped ones could be post war. I don´t think any concensus was reached. I will see if I can find the thread. Also it was a discussion on the flatbacks. The question was why would W & L have two totally different dies? One with ropes and hollow and the other one without ropes and flat?

At one time there where alot of "100" marked original rings floating around and if I remember correctly some of them ended up on these eastern peoples medals and was sold by some european dealers.

I am not saying the posted medal is fake, I cannot falsifie it, but there is issue with these eastern peoples medals.

          Hello,

I think this is the thread that you are referring to:

          http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...hlight=ostvolk

I never cared for the non-rope, flatback type either. But the fact that this exact type was illustrated in the wartime publication, Die Auszeichnungen des großdeutschen Reichs, by Dr, Heinrich Doehle in 1943, is more than enough proof, for me, that this type did indeed exist during the war. The non-rope type may have actually been the initial production design.

          Best regards,
          Tom

Here are the color plates, which can be found in the 1943 edition of Die Auszeichnungen des großdeutschen Reichs by Dr. Heinrich Doehle. If anyone is interested, a reprinted and English translation is available as: Medals & Decorations of the Third Reich, translated and edited by William E. Hamelman and published by Reddick Enterprises, copyright 1995, ISBN 0-9624883-4-8. This is a really great reference that I can't recommend enough.

              Best regards,
              Tom

                Thanks for finding the thread

I get your point with Doehle.

One thing to remember is that the illustrations are drawings and not photos, and if I remember correctly there are other awards drawn with specific details that has not been manufactured that way.

But I think it impossible to penetrate this and to get 100 % clarification.

The Doehle pics are a okay reference!

                  Peppe,

Perhaps there will be some period super close up to see an Osvolk with out the rope... It hasn't been seen yet though.

                  Thank you, Scott

IMO the piece from the beginning is from the pics
a period original. I`ve no problems with it.
