ARMED FORCES DAY BADGE. (Reserve Abzeichen)

Has anyone ever seen or heard of this badge?

I bought this fpr because I thought it looked good and now I see it listed as a real badge?

Did the German TR ever us any type of plastic on badges? This seemed phoney as heck to me.. here is a link where I saw it as real.

    Thank you! Scott

    Hello Scott,

Very nice piece. This is a form of polystyrene plastic and it is original to the period. The polymer was actually developed by Badische Anilin & Soda-Fabrik around 1930. Both BASF and I.G.Farben continued its development so that by the late 30s, it was being used in the molding of many different items. Several different manufactures began to use this polymer for tinnie/day badge production. The material was also used for molding backplates for ribbon bars. (I believe one example is shown in Parade Medal Bars of the Third Reich.)

One manufacture in particular (Richard Sieper & Söhne of Lüdenscheid) became prolific in their use of polystyrene for day badge production.

    Best regards,
    Tom

Tom, Thank you for verifying that is a real item I have... here are my plastic tinnies.. like I said I figured these were more "novelty" items when I picked them up.. It would be something if these are all real period pieces.. I haven't researched any of them except the orange piece. I found a guy swearing it was real on some blog but it didn't say what it was for or why he thought it was real other than he had a lot of tinnies...

                  Hello Scott,

All four of those are definitely real, without a doubt.

I don't think the WHW one (lower left) is plastic, though, is it?

Love the SA tinnie with the viking ship.

                  Best regards,
                  Tom

It feels like it plastic.. but I placed it on a glass surface and it does make more of a medal sound...

Are these tinnies rare? I am going to research these to see their meaning... that is a lot of the fun I get in this. I have all this stuff and now I am older and more mature to sit down, research, catalog/index things etc...

This might make up for the bad coastal badge! LOL.

Yes, it is probably a lightweight potmetal. The way the pin is crimped on the back of that one is a good indication that it is metal rather than plastic.

None of those tinnies can be considered rare, but they are nice pieces, just the same.

                        Best regards,
                        Tom
