    Unknown Badge ID Needed on Artillery Waffenrock...Might be common and I missed it, but I haven't seen this one...Thanks for the help. Ed

    That is an old style Long Service schnall. These were replaced in 1913ish by the LS medals.

          Don,

          It's actually a "Hessen-Kassel" Long Service Award 3rd Cl. for 9 years. 1849-1866.....according to Nimmergut's "Orden & Ehrenzeichen 1800-1945"....1990 edition lists it for 265,DM (but of course your ribbon is shot....)

          Certianly couldn't belong on the Dress tunic you pictured.

            It looks like an Imperial Prussian Long Service Schnalle to me.

                    Yours looks to be a Prussian Long Service Schnalle 3rd Class, for 9 years of service since the clasp is blackened iron and the ribbon has black edge stripes. The one that started the thread looks like it has a silver clasp and therefore should be a 2nd Class for Unteroffizier with 15 yeras of service.

                      Only going by the "book"....the ribbon looks to have been blue with white stripes...(not black) to me...but hard to tell......and it matches exactly the "Hessen-Kessel" 9 Yr. L.S., while the Prussian version, at least in the book, is alittle differant.....thou the letters in the box are the same....

                      Of course, the book maybe wrong......I'm not an expert on Imperial awards....just trying to increase all of our knowledge.....

                        "This guide will cover only the Prussian Military Long Service 2nd Class Badge. The Militär Dienstauszeichnung 2. Klasse Schnalle (often abbreviated MDA 2.) was instituted in 1825 by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. It was designed to be worn slighly below the heart. It was awarded to military active duty NCO's and enlisted personnel for a minimum of 15 years active service and required the recommendation of their Commanding Officer. "
