SS 4-Year Service Medal with Ribbon

Greetings. I have this medal advertised in the e-stand, but many are suggesting I put it in the forum for discussion. I will admit that my open photography skills are somewhat weak - hence the many suggestions. Therefore, I scanned the medal as seen above and below in this post. Details, like the pebbling on the medal's surface, can now be seen more clearly.

The next photos, admittedly, are rather poor, but they get the point across. Maybe my camera is the problem. Anyway, the ribbon is folded over and sewn at both ends at the top. Of course, I am not going to pull it apart. I have exposed and photographed the teardrop suspension ring as best I could given this impediment.

As to the dimensions of the medal it is 38+mm wide and almost 3mm thick. The suspension ring is 16+mm long and almost 2mm thick. The eyelet is 5+mm wide and there is evidence of an old solder application at the base. The letters in "Fuer Treue Dienste in der..." are 4mm high.

Please submit your opinions, humble and otherwise. Thanks!

    Suumcuique,

Thanks for posting the medal in here for review. Unfortunately your photos are not up to it I'm afraid which would explain why we aren't getting any comments in here.

Take a look at this thread:

    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ad.php?t=47673

These are the kind of pics you need to supply. See what you can do.

    Cheers,
    David.
At Rathau on the Aller, the CO of 5th Royal Tanks advanced on foot to take a cautious look into the town before his tanks moved in. He encountered one of his own officers, a huge Welshman named John Gwilliam who later captained his country's rugby team, 'carrying a small German soldier by the scruff of his neck, not unlike a cat with a mouse.' The Colonel said: 'Why not shoot him?' Gwilliam replied in his mighty Welsh voice: 'Oh no, sir. Much too small.'

Do not even the scans help, Don?

I think it is easy to tell on the 8 year pieces...but the 4 year ones are tough...I am not sure there is any consensus on what is correct on the 4 year pieces.

This medal does have the correct detailing on the acorns that is missing on most of the fakes.

However, the wreath binding looks like it is overly-detailed. This is a common problem on the SS 8 year fakes.

Also, the color is not exactly quite right.

Is the jump ring soldered on separately? Is the suspension loop soldered together at the small end?

Take a look at this thread for a good example: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ad.php?t=51070

Can you provide extreme closeups of the lettering like in the thread referenced above?

            Curt,

I looked at the other thread. I have only ever owned this one medal, but on the same piece (referring to the other) I would not expect the fineness of detail on the acorns and the lack thereof on the wreath binding. That, to me, seems a bit strange. The binding on these medals is not in greater relief than the acorns, and yet the binding on the one at the other thread looks to be worn down whereas the acorns adjacent to it retain their detail.

The disparity of color is an issue of photography, I believe. Are you seeing darker or lighter with my award?

Yes, the jump ring on mine appears to be soldered on, and the suspension ring appears to be soldered at the small end. Better pictures are forthcoming with arrival of my new camera next week.

            Dale
