    Light Dark Afrika Medal????

    Hello People,

This Afrika Medal arrived today. The design is normal for me, early type. But the color and the weight are strange for me. The color is dark brown and the weight with ribbon and pin is 10,20gr (this is too light!!!!!!!). Another buntmetal in my collection have 14,5gr with ribbon. Looks like as aluminium. The ribbon is original.

Your dimensions are: 30,95x35,34mm (it is normal for me)

It should be from zink, but this one looks like a cast fake. The letters are suspicious.

I also get a feeling that it might be a cast fake. But the pics isnĀ“t the best quality.

        Hello,

there is nothing wrong with your medal and it is 101% original.

The one you show is not made from solid buntmetal but instead is made of zinc or monkey metal which has had a bronze/ brass plating put over it. Some times this may impact on the letters of the words when they do the plating and on your example the zinc/ monkey metal underneath the plating has reacted due to the mix of metal used when it was made hence the bubbled effect coming through.

I have had several brought back by New Zealand soldiers like this and judging by the fading of your ribbon and the rust marks where the pin once was then I would say that your one saw some of the Afrika sun.

Nice original showing real use and age,

        Chris

In fact I can just see a wee bit of the pin showing

so it is still there and all complete which is even better,

Chris could be right, it is either zinc bubbles (then the medal is original) or it is from a casting.

IMO it is/was hard to decide from these pics, but Chris has good points and the medal can of course be original.

I would like to see close ups of the makermarks.
