40 LS medal..... Very uncommon to find on a bar and for good reason. You would think if the guy had any apprieciable Imperial time that he would have some other Imperial awards. Yet he doesn't, not even a Jubilee. So we have a guy, presumably a Prussian, with possibly 8 years credit for WW1 service (as a front fighter no less). Did they stop awarding civil servants LS medals at the same time they stopped issuing them to the Wehrmacht? That was in 41-42 I believe. 42-8 means he had to start serving in 1911 at the latest (4-6 years service credit for 39-42). The reason I bring this up is that if you look above the LS cross you will see the furled ribbon is held together by a bit of blue thread. You don't see that construction technique for the other ribbons. You see this on bars where awards have been removed and/or replaced. This could be the sign of an upgrade imo. I'd like to hear other thoughts on this.

Maybe a 25 year faithful service.

              or

Army, Navy, Airforce 4 year service.

Either one of these replaced to enhance the bar.

              Just a thought.

Well spotted Don. This medal is also not sewn down like the other two. I will agree with you in that the 40 Year Faithful Service Decoration is not often seen mounted, but I do not think it necessary for a soldier to have any more medals than what is displayed here. A number of them ended up with just an EK2 and some form of Imperial long service medal. In my opinion a Jubilee medal is not necessary either for someone to have served the 40 year span this decoration reflects. Here are some examples from my ribbon bar collection of the 40 Year Decoration. The first 3 are without Jubilee medals, the remaining two have Jubilee medals. The fifth ribbon bar has the 50 Year Faithful Service Decoration.

It is possible that this medal bar was upgraded though, but again not necessarily by someone post-war (though that still is a possibility). It could have been the owner himself having been awarded the 40 Year and instead of getting his medals remounted he replaced his 25 Year medal himself.

Would serving the German Government in some shape or form prior to 1914 in a non-military role count towards time for a 40 Year Award? Therefore not getting a jubilee medal but still having racked up 40 years?

                Kind regards

Hi Pierce. Anything is possible but when you are dealing with an medal bars you now they must tell a story. Not just the awards but also the construction. How do you make a $100 bar a $200 bar? An upgrade. Did the recipiant do it or did some collector do it or did the last owner do it? Who knows but it must be at least pointed out. BTW, the scenario I used was the best case for this combo being good.
