Commerative Medal for Life Saving EStand

    Hi Everyone,

A member has asked me to post this for discussion, please let me know what you think. The piece is 50mm across, I don't see any markings on the piece.

    Thanks in advance,
    Keith

It looks like a cast piece. Detail is poor. Should be coin stamped with a mirror finish.

      Thanks Tom,

It's definitely a struck piece and not cast. I'll get better pictures in the day light. The piece has the same edge imperfections at the 1 and 7 o'clock positions, like the one in Niemann's book.

I wiped some of the dirt off with a damp rag and retook the photos. The feather detail in the neck and right wing are better than in the photo, it's hard to get a good one without any glare. The lines are from the window screen not on the medal itself.

Have to admit, it does look a lot better now.

            Thanks Tom,

It came with some other medals that were in the same condition. But you take what you can get.

              Hi,

              please compare:

No maker mark or silver content on the rim like above?

                Hi Uwe,

Yes There is a faint 900 mark on the rim at the tail.
I had to use a glass to find it but it's there.

                  Hi everyone

One thing that makes this hobby so fascinating and sometimes a bit frustrating is that it isn't an exact sience.

Tom's angled illustrations are not valid to me as theres diference in the sices ot the compared pics and the one drawing with the arms going right takes off further to the left than the other whiceh changes the angels.

Tom: My main points and arguments have been that Dions medal shows pitting, rounded soft details and a dull finnish not seen on any accepted medals of this kind. Finnish is over missing details and pitting and all of this is enough to say that tyhis medal dosen't live up to what I belliewe has been generally accepted in the collecting community as accepted standards for a medal.

The missing toolmark is hard to explain but as you know with Juncker badges they are not often there. The rim on dions piece is rounded because its cast or so the explanations has allways been.

                  Cheers Thomas
