    Cased Westwall authenticity

    Hi,
I've seen a few of these knocking around and suspect that they are fakes. did the WW ever come in a case at all?

    Sure did!

Hi John, the West Wall was available in a private-purchase case. Some folks will spin a yarn about "special cases for elite officers" (as my Frainch cousin likes to say) blahblahblah....
BUT, it is one of the most heavily faked (and darn fine job they did)
IF it's legit, no glow to any components, glue, lining, etc. Should be a bronze medal, not tombak or zinc and it should have some age to it.
The pix you show looks brand-spankin' new....
    Hope this helps!

I agree that this looks new etc, it's just an example to illustrate the question - but did the 'special case' that you mention look like this one?

        Dear John.

NO this case is a 101% reproduction made in England, early '90's.

The original and only known examples to me are in a dark red or burgundy case of which I do not own one yet it's a bit like the luft flak cardboard blue box for a rough example.

How do I know this is fake...........uuhhh dear, I own one and I also now know where they come from. I've seen nine of these in the last six months at just local antiques fairs here in Northants.

These cases weren't for 'special' officers but originaly intended for the rank of Major and above, this theory or fact interludes with the EK 2 RK style box ?

Ricky your the expert on boxes etc What are your thoughts about the Major and above theory, there must have been a reason for these of style of boxes on all accounts ?

        Kind regards,

        Marcus

          I can't offer....

... any concrete reasons for the presence of these boxes. The theory of special cases for rank is plausible, but there's no way to prove/disprove the theory. I would tend to think they were available more of an afterthought, than a "Lets give every senior officer a cased one" theory. My guess would be that if you private-purchased the piece, you could buy the case as well.
Remember the WW1 Honor Crosses were all awarded in plain paper packets, and rarely titled... But you could buy those beutiful cases for them, if you wanted to. I even have an add here exhorting vets to purchase the case!
I'll mail it to you next outbound package Marcus, an interesting tidbit to put into your book!
