How is this SS 8 year?

What do you think. From what I have been reading I should have got better pics of the loop and ring. The loop was a teardrop though. Im not so sure if the ring was soldered on.

Elvis, I think that you are correct that it is too hard to tell if this is a good piece or not from the pictures that you have. Also, the SS long service medals that I have seen in the past have a dark, almost chocolate coloration to them. This looks to be in great shape though if it is in fact an original piece.

The four years are the chocolate coloured, the 8 years are more bronze.

Although there is suppossed to be a "2nd" model 8 year that is darker.

Like Robin I think your's is ok esp if it has the teardrop loop

                    Absolutely!

These 4 years and the top 8 years are very nice

But see the 'second pattern' you refer to. I'm afraid I have my doubts about that one This is the type you could buy back in the 1970s from Geoffrey George Warner (a.k.a. 'Weiner aus Wien') who peddled his wares from Brighton and elsewhere in the south-east of England. He sold these as copies at £20 apiece. They had their own distinctive characteristics - flatter runes, sketchy lettering on the reverse, and a plain (not counter-sunk) loop at the top. They had the correct teardrop suspender. As I recall, they were also slightly heavier and thicker than the standard 8 years award. This looks like one of these to me.

                    Regards,

                    Robin.

I agree with Robin on the 2nd model 8 year(the darker one).
I have always regarded them as reproduction.
I tend to favour the first model 8 year craig shows as they have all the traits i look for in an original.

I dont mind the first medal but the stipling looks "dotted"as opposed to the more "random finger print"type.im used to seeing.
Then again digital cameras dont always represent things truly.

                      Craig,
I remember you have a fairly good shot of one of your originals stipling closeup, which is the type i like to see,any chance of seeing it for comparison?

Here's a close-up of an 8 Year I picked up locally last week.

                        Hope this helps.

                        All the best,

                        Toby.

I have noticed light stippling on the 8 which does not appear on some of the originals shown. It have been told it could possibly be a cast. Any opinion on that subject?

                          Thanks a lot

Yes I remember this as well, I am 99.5 % sure that the pics with the ribbons shoing front & back are old Detlev pics I saved before he started putting his man on the bottom of them, maybe he can shed light on this

                              Craig,
Perhaps i was mistaken in thinking it was you who posted the stipling.

There was a really good shot of the stipling and jump ring.it must of been someone elses shot. The medal was identical to yours.

The stipling that toby shows on his recent addition is what i like to see. Also the nice crisp strike to the lettering.
Elvis,s example stipling looks too dotted and the lettering looks too rounded.
Elvis,s example also has surface imperfections(mild pitting) all over the lettering .
