The Order was instituted on May 1st 1935 and changed name to Deutscher Adlerorden (DAO - German Eaglesorder) on December 27th 1943. Affiliated with the Order were the "Deutsche Verdienstmedaille" (in silber) and from December 27th 1943 also a bronze version.
It was awarded with swords for military or without swords for civilians. As far as we know, the swords were introduced on April 20th 1939 and military genrally received the swords version form November 9th 1942, regardless the reason for awarding.

This is not correct information....The German Eagle Order was instituted on


May 1st 1937. The different categories are named "Verdienstkreuz vom Deutschen Adler". The Silver medal named "Deutsche Verdienstmedaille" (German Medal for merit).

In 27 december 1943 was created the German Eagle Order medal bronze version (Bronzene Deutsche Verdienstmedaille).

It was awarded with swords for military or without swords for civilians. As far as we know, the swords were introduced on April 20th 1939 and military genrally received the swords version form November 9th 1942, regardless the reason for awarding.

9th 1942?....is not correct again....military awarded receive the Order with swords from 26 may 1939, date of publication of the new regulations of the German Eagle Order.
