I know Souval made these, I think the only European firm to do so. I know on the 1st class it has to read Souval on the backing plate to place it of wartime manufacture, at least this is what I have heard . These were produced well after the war into the 60s if Iam not mistaken. Bob Hritz knows a lot about these, he can tell you for sure, IMO I like yours. Iam also not saying that it is wartime, I do not consider the postwar ones as copies.Last edited by münster; 01-30-2009, 04:09 PM.Iam Uncle Sam

i think these medals came in bronze/silver/gold, with and w/o swords, plus a starburst design with ribbon/pinback & neck order, i think thats the one with the souval name on the reverse, i did'nt know they were still being made so late, and i dont know how many were made or value, but like you said, its something different!!sigpic 57ers...."The Devil Is In The Detail"

I know 2 docs, one is illustrated in the Littlejohn book "Foreign legions of the third Reich", vol. 4
One to a Oberleutnant of the "2./Ind.Freiw.Leg.i.d.Waffen SS" in december 1944 for the 2nd class of the order with swords (badge like the EKI).
The other one to another Oberleutnant of the "Kp.-Fhr. (Ind.) I.R. 950" in august 1944 for the 3rd class of the order without swords (with ribbon like the EKII).

A mud-puddle really.
It was never a German Decoration it was the Free India's 'Azad Hind' medal,
some Germans, Japanese and even some Italians received them how it managed to get into the 'Third Reich' cannon is lost to time but most of the early collector books list them adn as they were made in the TR and given out by an organization linked to the Axis once could see why.
Myself never bothered with them.
Like the other said were made by souval well after the war with the orginal dies and to the same quality if not better.
They were made and issued right up to the 1960s when Azad Hind organization finally faded away.
Mind you one see allot more interest with our old friend 'Chandra Bose' Some good new history and some obvious revisionist stuff out there on the INA.
The 'Official' history has long been, "Most of the INA just surrendered when confronting other Allied troops"
The Revisionist have them battling the and defeating Allied forces and taking over huge swaths of India during the U Go offensive and defending to the death and where only defeated by the break down of the Japanese.
The truth is some-place in the middle of course a good place to start is here

Rather on the pro side but neat none the less
