Croation WW2 Legion Medal Identify and Authenticate..any help apprec.

    Hello Wehrmacht Posting Community,
The following photos are of 2 of the same (But
    obviously very "different" medals. Firstly,
What is the official name of this croation "Pavelic" award?
The criteria for receiving it? and Lastly,
Which One gets the thumbs up?
Thanks again for your help..it's hard to
find Croation Militaria Books that aren't
in the native language. .or that don't cost
    an arm and a leg.
    Bob

    unknown croatian medal

    Hello,

The medal you are showing is the " Leader Ante Pavlic Bravery Medal " = official name or in Croatian " Kolajna Poglavnika Ante Pavelica za hrabrost "

It was awarded for deeds of personal bravery in combat , Civilians as wel as foreign military forces could be awarded this medal.

It can be found in 4 distinct classes :

    * Gold medal ( worn on a ribbon trough the first button hole )
    * Large Silver medal ( on a triangular shaped ribbon )
    * smal silver medal ( the same kind of ribbon )
    * Bronze medal ( the same style of ribbon )

The recipients of the golden medal where allowed to bear the title " Knight " , the ribbon is about 40 mm wide ( red ) and with 6 mm wide white edges

These are silver medals you are showing , there can be silver medals found with a makers mark : a smal point and the lettres : BK ( wich stands for Braga Knaus, or brothers Knaus ).

These where produced in as well real silver towards poor silver content metals without a silver mark.

a very helpful croatian book regarding these awards etc ... is the one written by Borna Barac & Sinisa Pogacic " Odlikovanja i Znakovje , Nezavisne drzave hrvatzke 1941 - 1945 " , it is as wel written in Croatian, Englisch and German and i think every major dealer in Germany can get this one for a rather nice price

By the way should this thread not be on the international forum ?

    Friendly greetings,

          Stijn,
the bottom medal turned out to be a bronze, (the
photographer washed out the real color which is
          like a golden brown..
the medal pictured at top is not owned by me..so
          i can't inspect for silver.

Thanks again for the great info!
I'm just getting into the whole Ustascha history/militaria thing. Really dark yet interesting stuff..There were Fascists of
just about every country except Poland..(I'm
sure there were some there too. Oi.
          Sincerely,
          Bob

            Hi Bob,

There is a dealer on eBay (denar-shark) who regularly lists the book that Stijin mentioneed. It is an excellent reference on Croatian (NDH) awards/insignia. I have done a lot of business with denar-shark; he is very reliable.
