    Nahkampfspange

I am looking into purchasing a close combat badge in bronze, and am contemplating purchasing one for $215. It is a dark almost chocolate to black in color to it with no visible pitting, chips dings etc. It has the initials R. on the left of the square and S. on the right and is missing the black square insert. The clasp looks to be in good condition. It looks to be in good shape. Is this about right for this maker and condition? Also, how common was it for the black square to fall out during the war? Many thanks for your help, Christoff.

From your discription it looks like you've found a Souval close combat clasp. Many out there lost their finish, so it would be great seeing a complete intact one.

Anyhow, with the fakes these days I think it will be best to post some pictures of the clasp on the forum
    Kind regards,
    Giel

      C.C Clasp

It is being sold off of a commercial website and am not sure as to the rules and ethics of posting the URL to that site. I am happy to do it if it is OK to do. As dark as it is, would they have had a lighter bronze guild applied, or did they develop a dark patina over time? Christoff

              Hi guys,

This type of Souval CCC is a grey area that we just don't have firm answers for yet IMO.

The obverse and reverse details are a match to commonly accepted Souval originals. However, the lack of crimping for the backplate as well as the non-typical dark finish has always made me personally consider this type to be Souvals post-war reproductions, made with the wartime dies. The backplate didn't "fall out" of the clasp, there was never one installed by Souval in the firstplace as there are no crimps to hold it in.

This type of clasp is for the avid CCC collector, who doesn't mind owning a controversial piece in their collection, which may turn out bad with future evidence. If you are looking to just have a nice CCC or 2 in your collection, I would recommend buying a more textbook type, like JFS, AGMuk or F&BL.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little
