No that is a second pattern 1st class.
The First pattern was a pin back and 50mm in size, The second pattern was shrunk down to 43mm and made a suspended medal and it was gold like this one the 2nd class was silver and It would be very very hard to fake a silver up to a gold without mucking up the medal.
Not sure which one is more 'rare' when I had them I had bought the whole set at once and one of the few I ever had with boxes.

And how many awards of 1-st klass have taken place?
Here's mine, I took the image on a bright day so the ribbon & award look brighter/newer than they actually are. The box is also recessed so that the award fits perfectly.
I do not unfortunately have images of the outside of the box but there is a gold line around the top.

Do you mean gilding the Cross or Box?
The box would not be that hard but the cross??
I guess one could do it to a silver cross using gold leaf but that would come off very quickly by a simple scrape with he finger nail showing the silver underneath. This would never happen with a real gold one.
One way to tell if the dealer uses Cotton gloves to hold the piece I would be very suspicions that it is a gilded 2nd class

Fire Service Cross
Chris is right about the case being rare.
When I was at the show in Gunzenhausen last year I asked Helmut Weitze if he had anything "special" to show me. He produced a 1st Class Fire Cross in it's case (the same as the one I have shown above) and told me that the price was €2250. I already had this award so I wasn't interested in buying his but I asked him why the price was so high and he explained that the case of a 1st Class Fire Service cross is very rare.
The set sold within a few minutes.
