Nice austrian style fold to the ribbon! If you would like to part with it someday please let me know, its just a different way to fold it, think its cooler than the standard. Matt

Original Ostmedaille, but theese trifold-ribbons are all made post-war for wearing it in veteran-organisations (Kameradschaftsbund) in Austria. The reason for this is, that folding the ribbons to a triangle is the traditional way to wear decorations in Austria from Austro-Hungarian empire up to our time, except the period between 1938 and 1945.

Peter, are you certain about this? I have seen some that are definatly what i would call period folded. I have usually seen this on ek2s and this being a first for an ost medal, but i like it. Im not saying that you are not correct, just curious. Matt

Hi Matt !

Yes, I'm sure as far as it concerns Austria. I have been collecting for about 30 years and I'm a member of such veteran-organisations myself. The ribbon on this ostmedal is definitely post-war (but not a copy !!!).
Although it ist possible, that you have seen wartime-trifold ribbons: This could be, if the bearer ist a HUNGARIAN soldier. They wore their medals (as former in Austro-Hungarian army) on trifold-ribbons also in 2nd world war.
But for sure most of them didn't get these ribbons, because they needed a special dealer: it's not possible to fold the ribbon with the "normal" one they were given with the award, because it's too small !

In my collection I have some of these awards (most time EK II, KVK II and Ostmedals) and I also keep them as they are, because the veterans wore (and are still wearing) them in this condition.

Yes your right, in hungary it was allowed to wear this kind of ribbon, but as far as I know only for officers and only for dress tunics. Soldiers ,NCO-s, and officers on duty had to wear it in the second buttonhole just a the germans. In the case of the EK.II the rules were the same.
