              Hi

Shield looks good but the cord does not! I do not like the knots on the cord or the material used for the backing.

Kenneth Wolfe has pointed out the mail flaw in this lanyard. Additionally I would expect to see protective cloth lining the back of the main cords and there is no evidence this lanyard ever had any applied.

Not all original lanyards have this protective backing. This panzer lanyard looks interesting enough to have an in-hand look before labeling it as bad...Tom

The first issue standard Army marksmanship lanyards did not have protective backing along the back of the long twisted cords. A later directive gave instructions on how to retrofit them with the protective backing.

Panzer marksmanship lanyards were issued after this directive and therefore one expects to see the protective backing or evidence of it having once been there.

Having said all that, the Panzer lanyard shown in this thread reminds me of the 4 new fakes I saw at the same dealer table at the 2008 SOS. In hand I found the twisted cords to be a bit wider than standard, the backing on the twisted cords to be nonstandard, the knots incorrect (exactly like this example), the rosette backing strange, and absolutely no aging on any of the 4. Way too many Red Flags for me.

                    Caveat emptor.

                      Dear Larry,

Not alot has been published on these lanyards so most of what we know is thru observation and collectors lore. That being said, I have to agree with what Tim has stated.

Additionally, most collectors seem to look for lanyards with 14 "loops" to them instead of the 15 that yours has. There is some debate on this, and I do not believe any regulations are known regarding the manufacturing of these, but almost all cords are seen with 14.

Another thing to look for is the bullion "thread count" which makes up the flat strands which in turn are woven to make up the lanyard. Most have 4 but some are mixed with 4 and 5 strands. From what I can see the one you picture has 5 count. Again nothing in regulations but most cords are seen with a 4 count.

As for the backing material on the rossete it does not have the same high quality sewing attaching it to the lanyard that I have come to expect to see on original lanyards.

My assumption would be a nice original Pz badge attached to a post war cord. Again, these are only my observations based on examing many lanyards and are not necessarily hard and fast rules.

                      Hope this helps.
