    Unknown medal/award

Hey guys, sorry to do this sort of thread again, but I had a guy contact me with a number of items he wants to sell and I can't figure out what one of the awards is... best guess I have is that it relates to Police or Railroad awards because of some other items in the group... right now I just have the paper he sent me so I don't have any pics to post yet...

The base is a silver cross overlayed with gold rays sticking out in all eight directions... above that is another overlay of a silver wreath... in the center is a golden circle with Schützen König (protect the king?) 1933 on one side and SZ Seb. Schütz Ges L-37 on the other. The top of the medal has a tiny circle connected to another ring, which in turn is connected to a loop on the bottom of a golden crown. The top of the crown has a cross on it, so I'm not sure how this is intended to be worn.

The closest thing I've found in searching this site and other commercial sites is some sort of knight's cross or house service cross because of the crown... anything that looks even remotely like it has been imperial I believe...

If anyone has any info (like other resources to search of a library of award pics or something) or ideas, please feel free to share

    Might this help?

    Hello,

I don't know what it is but have found the large data base on this site helpful for award identification at times. If you are not already aware of it you may find an example there.

*sigh* I just went through every German medal they have, nothing even close... even checked out some of the other countries just in case.

It's a shooting award from a local contest.

        Cheers
        Don

          Hi Bagel,

          Don is correct.

"Schützen König" is not "protect the king".
The "Schützenkönig" is the best man in an special shooting competition, often shooting on a wooden eagle.
He is the King for one year, here 1933/1934, with many allegiances. His wife is the "Schützenkönigin", the Queen.

"SZ Seb. Schütz Ges" could be "St. Sebastianus Schützengesellschaft" or "St. Sebastianus Schützenbruderschaft".
That is in English approximately "The Marksmen Confraternity of St. Sebastian".

          A picture would be helpful.

          Regards
          Uwe

Well that certainly helps, thank you, altho I still can't find any pics that look anything like it. I've taken a pic of a pic so it doesn't look very good, but at least you can see what it looks like in general... It's really pretty, but as a shooting award, I can't imagine it's worth much is it?

              Hi Bagel,

it is an absolut normal decoration for a "Schützenkönig".

Please see here for present examples:

Those are definitely similar, especially the crowns. Maybe I was having trouble finding examples because I've been using english search engines instead of german ones, and looking for period example instead of modern.

Are there any sites or collectors who specialize in shooting badges? Sometimes it seems like no matter what something is, there are people who collect it. Are these things collectable/valuable at all, or would $50 US be an overly generous offer on my part? :P

I also found this while I was looking around for more examples. Does this site pertain to the same St. Sebastianus Schützenbruderschaft that Speedy alluded to earlier?

                  Hi Bagel,

in principle yes, it is such a "Schützenbruderschaft".

But there are some more, please see her, more than thousand "Bruderschaften":

                  http://schuetzen.erzbistum-koeln.de/...rschaften.html

And for shooting on the (wooden) "bird" and for the proud King and Queen please see here :

                  http://www.sebastianus-flittard.de/B...essen2007.html

There are only a few collectors of these decorations, such as I.

Most of these collectors look more for such decorations:

Alrighty then, I am completely lost, LOL... so this guy has a shooting medal from the Marksmen Confraternity of St. Sebastian along with some WWI and WWII memorabilia, but very few people collect these things and the ones around here like different stuff entirely, heheheh.

I find myself wondering if I should even bother buying this stuff from the po' old codger, as most of it isn't worth very much to begin with. *sigh* I thought maybe the shooting medal would end up being the prize, but it seems the WWI EK2 wins out in the end after all. Maybe I'll offer him $200 for everything and hope the medal and EK2 go for a decent price, as I'm really into the WWII stuff and couldn't care less about WWI mem.

In any event, thank you guys for all the good info and links and help; I'm more confused than ever, but at least I've learned a few more things and have some decent info to present the guy with when I meet with him.
