John Angolia himself told me this was a good one and that both fonts are possible...
While reading reference books written 20-30 years ago, please keep in mind that even the authors have found out later that statements made in their books aren't 100% accurate - it was just the best information they had at the time. Again, Mr. Angolia told me that this medal is a good one - in his opinion - recently.Last edited by DZR; 07-07-2008, 05:19 PM.

Curt, that happens to me all the time
DZR, the 1937 version of the Verdienstmedaille came in silver only and featured the Gothic script, as stated in this thread. With the addition of swords in 1939, the script stayed the same. In 1943 the script changed to Latin type on both the silver version and the newly introduced bronze version. However, the medal shown by you is not consistent with Angolia's own statements i.e. the center-striped ribbon and marked suspension ring indicates 1943, but the script doesn't. Even with a correct ribbon (non-striped) and definite acknowledgement of a silver version (hard to tell by the image), the marking would still be wrong (should be marked 835. PR.MÜNZE BERLIN).
cheers
Peter

With the Eagle Order particularly in the rearrangement in 1943, there were some unexplained use of tile in the case and document. As to the medal in question, it is possible that the dies were employed to produce the medal in Gothic script, in bronze as an interim arangement. Another possibility is that the bronze version as shown was indeed going to be silver plated, but used in this form. Other unexplained varriations are the Social welfare medal in bronze. The General assault badge in bronze.

Bronzene Verdienstmedaille with swords and gothic script
I also got a bronze Verdienstmedaille (with swords and the red strap with white line in the centre). It has gothic script. It seems as a genuine peace. Obviously some variations are possible...
Does anyone know the value of such medal?
Thank you!
