        Rainer,

This has to be the 1. Oktober 1938 medal (the small outer lines in white, then two large black stripes and - in this case - the inner area in orange).

I agree with Laurens, Oktober medal that was coloured wrong by the photographer/studio.

Considering that the guy in the picture probably had NO WW1 service, I am still sticking to Oct 38 medal. Remember this is not a colour picture, it was done by someone after the fact and they messed up.

The outer bars are too thick to be a ribbon d'oktober 1938. Compare to mine:

                    P1010111.jpg

He doesn't look old enough to have served in WW1, so I doubt it is a WW1 award.

The ribbons are much smaller on multi bars. I borrowed this pic from Richard on the estand to show the difference.

The portrait picture was taken in at least 1939 (ek2). Does the guy look like he is old enough to have a WW1 award, without a frontfighter or any other award he might have picked up including Long service?

I'm confident the ribbon bar in the picture from Rainer is for the 1. Oktober 1938 medal. This makes more sense than a single Hanseatic cross. Additionaly, if you take the red and white colour from the EK2 ribbon, then we see it cannot be the Hanseatic ribbon either.
Also, it is not safe to compare one sample. As reference, please see the thread below and examine the various ribbons for the 1. Oktober 1938 medal. One will see that the thickness of the outer lines are not always the same:

hmm - so either Hanseatenkreuz or October Medal... Thanks for all opinions on this. It does look like the Hanseatic cross, but there is no way this guy has taken part in WW1 already - I don't know anything about the technique either, that the photo studios used in order to produce these colorized portrait pix - maybe some negative type of pic of the picture for some reason, that made the dark appear bright and vice versa or whatnot...
certainly appears like the guy coloring this pic had been a civilian who didn't pay attention to this military detail.
                          Thanks for all input
