    SS 8 & 4 year medal

    Hello guys,

I would appreciate some help at this:

Is this a original 4 year one?

Is this a original 8 year one?

And, why this diference in surface (like 4 years more granulated)?

What why this thing (i do not know the correct name in english ) is smaller at 8 years?

    Thanks a lot guys.

    Hello,

I suggest you wait for more experienced members than I, such as Keifer Kahn, to comment but in the mean time I can tell you that there are two 2 makers of these medals, Petz & Lorenz and Deschler. They each have different traits. I believe the 4 year is patterned after a P and L and I doubt it is authentic. Maybe it's the photo's but to me the crosshatching on the acorns lacks sharpness. I believe the 8 year is an authentic Deschler. A Deschler has a shorter bevelled jump ring and finer stippling. The P & L has a taller ring without the tapered or bevelled sides.

Remember, I am new to these also so wait for others to comment, I may be incorrect. If you use the search feature and type in either of those names you will get lots of threads to compare. Remember that when you type in Deschler to limit it to the General Awards section otherwise you will get many hits as they made many types of medals.

    Regards,
    Stu

Interesting observations about the makers, Stu. I think both are good. I think the acorns are just blurry from the photos. It appears that the eyelets on both awards are countersunk, which Ive not seen on bad ones.
Just my opinion, Id like to hear what others have to say, too.

Any chance for a shot of the 4 year eyelet from the side? It may be helpful.
      Cheers,
      Ryan

            SS 4 and 8

            Hi Guys,

Ryan...thanks for your comments. The eyelets being countersunk is new to me. In fact that's why I commented as I did...to learn more. I'm hoping that when this thread is done I can go over it, and others, and then make up a check list of points to examine on these for the future.

clevischi...if the photo's are slightly out of focus and the cross hatching is actually sharp then I would think the 4 year is good also as that was my only concern. Thanks for allowing me to comment like this on your thread. It's a great learning experience.

            Regards to all,
            Stu

              Hi clevischi,

The ribbons passed in UV test?

              Best regards,

              Ricardo.

                4 & 8 yr ss

For anyone wanting to see a text book 8yr Petz & Lorenz and 4yr Deschler look on e-stand on medals and badges.
Munster currently has these for sale with fantastic photo's to see clearly all the detail necessary to identify these 2 types.
Good photo's are essential to identify these medals and these photo's are pretty lousy.
I think there are a few good things about these medals but I think the big guns need to approve them or otherwise.
                Regards
                Steve

Looking thro past posts on these I think Stu is right on the makers, the p&l eyelet is much thinner, so I would go 4yr p&l and 8yr deschler.
I think they are both ok.
                  Regards

                    Thanks by the new information.

The medals that Munster is selling i could identify:
Munster 4 years has the same maker as my 8 years (Deschler?).
Munster 8 years has the same maker as my 4 years (Petz & Lorenz?).

                    Do you guys agree?

                      Another information could be found:

                      A nice P&L 8 years:
                      http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=197500

Another 8 years, but now a deschler:
                      http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...S+long+service

                      A 4 year deschler:
                      http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=161941

And now two post that made some confusion, comparing 2 diferent makers:

                      http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=197426
(I had doubts about it, and thought the both could be originals)

Like to hear some more opinions the make this topic about ss service awards clear for everyone.

                        Clevischi,
Your last two posts are correct, you can now identify the two different makers.
Mark vis has a 8yr deschler currently for sale on e-stand which is the same has your 8 year one.
                        Regards
                        Steve
