    As long as you have enough thickness to remove the old work and prepare the surface correctly, it doesn't much matter what was there before. I've never altered or engraved serial numbers on any gun myself. The gov't really frowns on that sort of thing. Ammersee

      It does indeed, but if a serial number has been filed off a gun the police can raise the number:
