For the experts of the Spanish Medal Campain
Hi for all members.
I received recently one mint type 1 medal visible on the left of pictures. On the right, another old type 1 medal of my collection. I found several important differencies.
Lion medal side :
- Point number 1 red : Noticiable details differences on the ribs of the lion. More relief on my old type 1 medal.
- Point number 2 red : Gold paint that overflows.
Eagle medal side :
- Point number 1 red : This "9 round" area is pretty much less detailed, round less deep than my first old type 1 medal (and all the other Type 1 medal that i seen untill today).
- Point number 2 red : border medal is wider at this point.
- Point number 3 red : the presence of a sort of border on the two rows of feathers that does not normally exist on these medals. Very, very strange point for me.
- Point number 4 green : design of the mouth of the eagle slightly different.
- Point number 5 green : border no longer exists at this location and is not comparable to my old type 1 medal.
Which is your expert opinion ?
Do you think the two medals (despite these noticiable differences) are authentic and period war ?

Hi Michael. Both are genuine medals made by Egaña, the only one firm contracted by the spanish government to manufacture them. Unfortunatly there is not a good research about the diferent issues of these medals. They were made from 1938 to (at least) the end of the 40´s. As more than a million of these were made during a decade, a lot of dies were used, and some "experts" say they can identify the war time pieces from details as you are comented before, but everyone say something diferent and in my experience, nothing is clear about this question. Only the 3-4% proximatly were made before the war finished, and almost all of them were awarded to italian and german soldiers. The spaniards must wait to the end of the war to be awarded and the main part of german and italian also. No diferences in price between the different issues do exist.
