Yes, it is a good marksmanship lanyard, Grade 2, first shield design. The early lanyards did not have fabric backing along the reverse of the large cords. Experience revealed the lack of this fabric backing caused chaffing to the uniform. Later regulations directed the unit tailors to add the fabric material to the cords but from the many examples I have seen over the years, it is obvious this was often ignored for these first lanyards.
