    Are these ribbon bars ok?

Guy's, I was going to sell these ribbon bars but first wanted to make sure they are ok or not.

    Thanks,
    Robert

The bottom one maybe (though the stitching on ribbons is terrible), but the top one raises some flags.

The construction is suspect as well as the runes not looking good to me.

There should be a cleft or space between the runes that I don't see here (maybe a close up photo?).

Check this link in the ribbon bar article to see good & bad runes:

Here's what good runes should look like.

Your top, longer ribbon bar, appears to be a "Paul Peters" example. The newness of the ribbons and in particular the wool backing, its color, and way it is stitched on are typical of his bars. Paul has been constructing bars for many years, many times to order, making them mostly from original ribbons and often with original hardware. He does not make them to fool people and sells them for what they are.

A few years back Nick Notara showed Paul a well aged, long ribbon bar with Imperial and TR awards. Paul could not determine if it was original or not. Nick laughed and assured Paul it was not original. How did Nick know? Nick had bought the bar from Paul some years previously. Nick then had reportedly soaked it in tea as an experiment and heated it with a hair dryer. It put a lot of years on the ribbon bar in a hurry.

About #1: Apart from problems with the construction, the combination and precedence are absolutely impossible. Two SS runes = FAKE (only one was allowed per regulation)! And no one would have screwed up the precedence of Sudeten before Memel medal!

About #2: The combination would be ok, but the construction (esp. the stitching pattern and no backing) looks very much like one of the recent fakes, coming especially from Austria. Have you blacklighted the ribbons?

              Chris,
I think you will find that two SS runes were indeed worn pre '45 on ribbon bars as shown in this pic of Karl Wolff.
I don't have the full picture unfortunately, only the shot of his awards.
It may be against regulations to wear the two runes together the same as it is against regulations to wear a spange through the buttonhole AND on the ribbon bar, but regulations were broken regularly.
However, the above ribbon bar with the runes that started the thread is a fake.

I'd really like to see the full picture, never seen that before. Then I'll modify my statement slightly: Apart from the 0.000001% chance of having Karl Wolff's original ribbon bar in your hands, bars with two SS runes are fake!

It would be very rare indeed....

I think I saved the pic from the internet somewhere, but can't remember where! If I find the full pic I will post it.

EDIT: It might be on the cover of a book now that I think of it???

                  Cheers,
                  Brett

Whoever the picture is of, the ribbon bar does not equate to Karl Wollf's awards. And I think it looks like it has been superimposed on the picture.

That image looks "shopped" to me.

Accidentally offending people on the internet since 1997

I must agree that the 'SS' bar shows all the hallmarks of an Ohio put-together.
As for the wearing of 2 SS=Service Awards?...the regulations clearly state:-
"Form and Manner of Wearing the Service Awards................
                        (8) With the bestowal of the SS=Service Award, a higher grade supercedes the lower Grade.
                        Berchtesgaden, 21. October 1938."
                        (Reichsgesetzblatt 1938, page 1540)
