    Different Eastern Front Medals

    Hi Guys,

I've been going through my small collection trying to sort out and identify for loading into Picasa web pages when I came across two Eastern Front medals.

The first with silver helmet is definately in zink by Klien und Quenzer as can be seen with the bubbling.

The second by Rudolf Souval with dull helmet does not have this bubbling.

Any ideas what the Souval is made of?

    Thanking in advance.

    Regards ...

You should take a look at this recent thread.

Same discussion, Robert not only weighs some Ostmedaille's but actually sands one down!
My opinion is that some are Tombak pieces, like your 2nd one, the 1st one Zinc.
          Hope that helps, Ant.

Hi Hagwalther, hard to tell going off pics, could be late war zinc.Have had a few of these in my time with no evidence of a finish ever being applied not sure if that is the case with yours as the ones i have had were alot darker in colour. Always hard in determining metal content from pics. All the best

              Thanks Guys.

Interesting stuff - the silver helmeted one is lighter than the other by 1.39 grams while they are both about the same diameter. However, the dull helmeted is thicker and this is where the extra weight is probably coming from.

To me I will log it as a good finish (which has prevented bubbling) zink version.

              Measurements were.

              Silver helmeted:

              Weight 17.98 grams
              Diameter 35.87 mm
              Width 3.54 mm

              Dull helmeted:

              Weight 19.41 grams
              Diameter 35.98
              Width 3.98

              Regards ...
