I have a Memel medal maker marked "13". The number is very, very properly applied into the ring. The details of the medal are stunning, but it has not the slanted "G". These medals confused me for a long time. Everybody sems to have has his on opinion of this medal. The problem is that there is no much clear info to compare. In fact my medal has more detail than many other that are showed the last few months? Are we coming to a point that the quality of a possibble fake is better than an original? For a very late War Badge I find that logical. But for a medal that was award before the War?

When I find the time I will try to send some pictures of it.

            regards, Theo

              Correction!!

Just cheked my files. It's also a "16" instead of an "13" (Alois Rettenmeyer, Swäbisch Hall). Again, the maker mark is very nice done. It is cetainly not an after done thing.

              regards Theo

                      Hi again,

"16" stands for Alois Rettenmeyer, Swäbisch Hall.

-My piece has an open ring
-details of the medal are very perfect.
                      -It has a straight "G".
                      -Maker mark is nicely executed.
-ribbon with faded colors and a bronzed pin for wear on civilian clothes.

This medal drives my crazy. Is it a possible fake? Then it is better manufactured then an original?

On the other hand... How many dies where made of this medal? And what are their characteristics? I keep records only based on the "G". On the most sites of well known dealers. And you can find both the slanted "G" and the straight "G"

                      Regards, Theo

The Memel is one of the more hotly debated medals as to what is real and what is not.

Myself I go with the style that has the 2 accorns and the slanted G. It is the one found on every medal bar I have seen to date.

So do I - this type is always seen on medal bars - the reason that I asked if the ring was soldered or not is because if it is open it could have just been slotted on and bent cloded agin..just a thought.
