    Large NSFK glider badge

    Hello,

In regards towards the Large NSFK glider pilots badge I have a question => I heard over and over that examples awarded towards Luftwaffe personell ( military ) where non numbered, is there anyone who heard this theaory also or can provide more info ?

I have very strong doubts about this theory ( thats the least I can say at the moment ) and any info regarding the right or wrong from this is very much appreciated.

    Both Versions Exist

    Hi Stijn,

I have seen versions of this badge that were both numbered and non-numbered. Upon asking a credible source, I was given a simple answer that makes sense to me.

The serial numbered versions were 'official' award pieces. The unnumbered badges were private purchase.

I don't know if we'll find the answer in a reference book, but I'm content with the explanation given to me. Kind-of stands to reason.

    Regards,
    Mark M.

      Large NSFK glider badge

      Hello Mark,

THanks for chiming in here => I also tend to believe what your source stated ( official awarded types = are numbered ), it is also much more difficult to find a numbered piece then a unnumbered piece.

There are however quite a few variants in construction when we follow the market but the question remains => howmany of these are really original ? , Im still looking to obtain one ( but it must be numbered ) , howmany types did you see that you believe are original ?

        Serially-numbered & Un-numbered NSFK Glider Pilot Badges

Regarding Mark Miller's comment: "I don't know if we'll find the answer in a reference book, but I'm content with the explanation given to me. Kind-of stands to reason."

I noted that John Angolia's reference book, "Political & Civil Awards of the Third Reich" (updated 1978 edition) states on page 256: "The standard issue badge was the property of the NSFK and was serial-numbered. Private purchase badges were not serial-numbered."

        Regards,
        John

          Numbering ...

It stands to reason that the NSFK would number their issue badges. Below are photos of a numbered Glider "C" badge that I was given by a good friend who was awarded the badge in 1940. He had carefully kept it all these years with the certificate. Note the number on the badge and the certificate match! So it would stand to reason also that for the Large Glider Pilot badge that Stijn is discussing, there would be a corresponding document with issue number!

Has anyone seen such a document? What a prize that would be to find in combination with the badge itself.

              Large NSFK glider badge

              Hello Mike,

Indeed => you do make a very good point in regards towards the small A, B, C and even Silver C certificates.

Here is original example of the awards document from my collection, as you can read in the thread below this example was obtained directly from the wearer himself. Sadly enough the badge itself went missing over the years.

              http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...+things+happen

I myself have only seen the badge (very damaged) and the same numbered award document ones with a friend glider pilot.

You can easely assume that these things are very rare as they replaced the Silver C certificate during 1942 and they could only be awarded for a very limited time (about maximum 2 years).

When one looks at the list of the awardings of its precedent (the Silver C certificate) then does one see that the awardings for the years 1942, and later on dropped very hard in Germany towards a near zero in 1944.

              Cordial greetings,
