    Ostvolk Medal Opinions

    Hi,
need a few opinions on this Ostvolk medal. The ring is magnetic. Does original non-zinc Ostvolk medals exist ? Because this one doesn´t look like a zinc piece. Please tell me what you think about the medal.
    Thanks
    Best Regards,
    Alex

          Hallo,

referring to Niemanns book, originals must be made of zink.
And this one does not look like made of zink.
On militaria123 these medals are often offered in very good condition.

So i doubt, that this one is authentic.

Alex, this is a cast piece of junk. From what I know, Detlev is correct in his statement.

I agree with Hansi on all accounts. In fact, this kind of has a "casting" look to it

                Were these re-issued in 1957?

Yes, Terry. They were reissued in 1957. But the 1957 version has a different look. They do not have the one long part, where the ring is put on.

The indention on the long arm halfway between the 9 and 12 O'clock positions, the odd shaped areas that appear raised on the reverse, the base metal as well as the lack of detail would indicate this as a cast piece. This would get a thumbs down.

Yes there were 1957 issues of these and they were the same except the 2nd classes had the ring soldered directly to the medal and didn't have the extended leaf at the top . Although the 1st classes are the same looking from the front both classes were not made from zinc in 1957 .

The one you show is a cast copy of a WW2 version .

Here is 1957 2nd Class in Bronze w/o swords that I used to own. Note how the ring is attached directly to one of the sun bursts. There is no extended piece like pre-45 versions have.
