Using WD-40?

    Ok folks, Don't get the idea that WD40 turns stuff green- It's just my lousy camera skills .

      The WD40 removes the white powder, it does not restore the aluminun, but the removal of the white powder is enough to save the badge.

        For what it's worth..........

        I would be very careful about leaving WD 40 on a plated medal. WD 40 is a penetrating oil. It does this very, very well. It is also known to damage or peel plating with long time application. This is a known sadness in the guntrade with nickel plated guns being damaged when WD40 eventually makes it's way between the plating and the base metal.

        It's a wise dictum not to put anything on or do anything that is not reversable to valuable collectables. Usually a careful wash with a neutral soap and a thorough drying is all that's needed on medals. If you must a good wax such as Renaisance Museum wax will be sufficient.
