    no DE MARCHIS stamp

Hello, I have an absolute 100% original medal from a german veteran.
It has the LORIOLI manufacturers name, but NO DE MARCHIS STAMP.
Some originals DID NOT HAVE THE "de marchis" stamp.
Anyone else have the same thing ?

Here are some better pics. As stated a long posting ago, (and I just re-checked it), the ribbon does not glow at all under black light.

@Marvin: Sorry, I did not want to confuse you. I just said that one fake I pictured had the maker´s name on the right side. There COULD be originals with the name to the right side, I do not know that! Maybe SONS OF MILANO marked on the right side.
Best way to tell is the base metal. If it is not brass Buntmetall and not zinc, but a modern type white metal, than you probably do have a fake. Can you show it?

      Cheers, Frank H.

            Hi Phil......

            ......look here:
            http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ghlight=afrika

and then try typing in afrika in the search box. There's a lot to be found.

What does the edge look like?

This is a great thread with lots of good information and pictures, but I was hoping to see a picture of the rim of the medal. I sas looking at one of these in an antique store, mixed in with several US medals and WW 1 IC 2nd class. It appears to be made of pot-metal and the rim shows a mold line running completly around the medal. Also the top is thinner than the bottom. Is this the way it should be?

Here are a couple of examples I have. One is Tombak bronze, one is zinc (direct vet bring back). Both are the same type.

                1. Tombak:

                  2. Zinc (note the wide silky ribbon - original to the medal):

What does the edge look like

                            Darrell,

The last picture of the zink medal looks like the one I am looking at in the antique shop. Does the edge of yours have a mold seam or is it smooth? Also, is the top part of the medal the same thickness as the bottom?

                            John

                              Hi John,

I'm away from home for a few days. I'm pretty sure the edge is smooth if I remember correctly.

Rather than start a new thread on this medal, I thought I'd add my question to this existing thread:

Was there an designated "front" and "back" to this medal? I've seen pictures of them mounted on bars either way. Same goes for the ribbon: was the black stripe to the viewers right or left side? Most ribbon bar pictures I've seen favor the black stripe on the viewers left, but I've seen it on the right side as well. I get the impression that it didn't matter that much since this was not an official German award. Am I correct?

                                Thanks!

                                Scott

Photo borrowed from Darrell's post above for example purposes only - I'll remove it if objected to.
