Hi to all,
I have made some experiences with UV light to a brazilian militaria forum and I find some interesting results with them. http://www.ommb.com.br/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=4849
1 - I submerged a half piece of a modern white twine in a detergent with optical witheners and after it the half submerged twine glows like a neon light:
Conclusion - White natural fibers in contact with modern detergents with optical witheners will be glow under UV light.Last edited by R.R.; 08-11-2009, 01:16 AM.

3 - I had made some experiences with 11 diferents modern white sew lines:
And the results are:
- 5 samples (45,5%) glows under UV light and produces solid material at the burn test.
- 3 samples (27,3%) glows under UV light and produces ashes at the burn test.
- 2 samples (18,2%) don't glows under UV light and produces solid materials at the burn test.
- 1 sample (9%) don't glow under UV light and produces ashes at the burn test.
Conclusions:
- Some modern sew lines or cloths are mades with synthetic materials and don't glows under UV light.
- There are some modern sew lines and cloths don't mades with synthetics materials but glowing under UV light.
- Some modern sew lines and cloths can don't glows under UV light and produces ashes at burn test like the 65 years old materials.
In my opinion UV light test and burn test are importants like auxiliar tools in the originality research, but not all conclusives to accept or discard an item.Last edited by R.R.; 08-11-2009, 01:21 AM.

This is all well and good. I think we can conclude that the UV is not the ultimate test, it is just one test in the toolbox -- as it is in forensic science.
I don't like items that have been washed anyway. To me, that is almost as bad as fake.
And when I see an SS tab that's aluminum thread's white core glows, I become exteremely suspicious. The same with an armband that has glowing white threads. During the TR, thread was not usually treated with whiteners.
If you really want to have fun with UV, take one to your next hotel visit and scan the sofa, blankets, carpet, etc. and ask yourself what all those glowing spots are. Then put on a body condom for the rest of your stay.

black light tests
One of the urban myths about the black light test is that artificial fibers glow and that the Germans never used man made fibers. Considering that the German chemical industry invented Rayon, that is hard to accept. The Germans invented the modern phosphate whiteners and they were patented just before the war. The black light test is valid only for the color white and no other. These whitiners were in the stream of commerce for cloth circa 1940. The Military Advisor article that is reproduced in the thread, conceded that the inner white core of original SS cuff bands could and did in fact glow. This is hidden in the article, but is there as a subscript to a photo. This picture is posted in the thread. The black light test is valid. The operative date for cloth is not after 1945, it is after 1939, when the patents were issued for phosphate whiteners.
