Question One - What would it be worth? One in the condition like the lanyard shown in this thread probably sells from between $150 - $250. That's a pretty good spread.
Question Two - Are they faking the lanyards? Kind of. That's a helpful answer. The simplest faking involves using a West German or East German lanyard with either an original badge or a cast fake. These are pretty easy to spot.
A more complicate faking takes an original badge, Grade 5-8, has it gold plated or gilded, then adds it to a lanyard (original or substitute). The best I have seen had badges that shown like the sun on lanyards that had backing material down the length of the twisting that had lines running lengthwise - that is incorrect - the material should have lines running across the material.
