I just got this today and I'm not sure if it's a wartime photo or a postwar copy. The photo is signed at the bottom postwar but it's also signed on the picture. I have to angle the photo to see the writing.

I think it's a post war produced image. Here's a signed post war copy v.d.Heydte image from my collection. Note it has basically the same spacing along the edges as the one you posted. Still worth some decent money though...

I think you are right on it being a postwar photo. I noticed that Heydte in my pic is a Hauptmann wearing an oakleaf and yours is a Major without an oakleaf. Is that normal for photos or am I wrong.....

Are you sure they're Hauptmann tabs? Looks like they could be Oberst (full oakleaves, 3 gulls). I think it would make sense if that were the case...

what you have here is one of the various autograph cards which General von der Heydte sent out to admirers, autograph collectors, etc.
Also, a good number of "fan-made" or "collector-made" cards exist where people produced autograph cards with their favourite photo of the good General and sent it to him to sign it for them.

Has any of you ever seen his autobiography "Muss ich sterben, will ich fallen..."?
I have a mint copy of the book, but according to his son, even the family is buying copies on the market these days. Talk about rare and collectible.
