De Nazified Continued Service Considered

I have a few De Nazified FJ Badges that have had their swastikas carefully removed by the veterans that wore them, I assume. I consider the De Nazification process part of their evolving history. Many of these badges were worn by veterans serving in the post war Bundeswehr . Back in the 1950's there were even FJ Veterans standing in formation as US Special Forces Soldiers proudly still wearing their De Nazified FJ Abzeichen . I imagine there were more than a few FJ Veterans at Dien Bien Phu. We seem to put an inordinate value on mint specimens of badges even when we claim to collect for the history that surrounds them. I remember the old saying, "God will not judge us by our medals,but our scars". The removal of the Swastika is one of the scars that the badges and the veterans have lived through. I don't kick De Nazified badges to the proverbial curb quite so readily as I might have when I was younger.
