dear eric, adding to what I said before, this FJ was with luftlande-sturm regiment 1,in the IV battaillon (blau).
also I can tell you from the next photo is that
he and his comrades were really very cold
(see photo) I can tell you more but you know all the history of the sturm regiment.regards manuel/azul45

Did anyone else notice the unusual way the Jäger in the first photograph has chosen to wear his gas mask bag?

Not a bit unusual Ian. The gas mask bag is designed to be worn tightly to the chest for jumping with a strap around the neck and another strap behind the back. These two straps are joined for relaxed wear over the shoulder on the ground.
