    Corinth Canal Bridge

    Hi Gents

I once read and don't ask me where because I can't remember. I read that there was an FJ Cameraman filming on the bridge when it exploded. He was killed but the footage survived. Has anyone seen this footage ?

    Regards
    Shaun

    Hi Shaun,

I have no (movie)footage, but I found this site on the net about the Corinth Canal Bridge.

Could that footage have been in one of the early episodes of World at War?

          Hi Shaun

The cameraman was Eberhard von der Heyden.
I've seen some pictures but never the movie.

          Regards

They found his camera at the bottom of the canal so that could indicate he was taking still photos and not video.

Shaun somewhere I've seen a photo of the bridge taken as it exploded.
Has anyone else seen this photo ?

Ofw Gerhard Raschke piloted glider No. 5 landing south of the canal bridge carrying 6./FJR 2. Shown here in a DFS-230 prior to the battle. Fw (then) Raschke was the squadron leader of Sturmgruppe Eben-Emael and piloted glider No. 1 during the raid on the fortress on May 10, 1940.

Actual piece of No. 5 glider fabric taken by Raschke as a souvenir after the battle. He was wounded during the attack so did not participate in the Crete operations in May.

Field gear belonging to G. Raschke damaged by shrapnel during the attack on Corinth Canal, probably saving his life.

...and coincidentally some of these items will also be featured in volume 3 of the upcoming Fallschirmjäger book that I wrote with the help of Patrick and the assistance of many WAF members and other FJ collectors. You have to be a bit patient though, as volume 3 isn't out until next autumn...

                              Cheers
