    Witzig 1976.

    Hello,

Anyone seen this before? It's a program that used to be on UK TV years ago, each week they would have a well known personality on and give a run down of their life and hook them up with long lost friends and relations.

This episode is Major General Frost (of Arnhem fame), towards the end of part one his captor of an earlier campaign pops up, non other than Witzig himself

    Wonderful. Thank you.

I don't recall seeing these episodes before. I did, of course, see A Bridge Too Far in the theatre when it first came out, and then read the book by Cornelius Ryan.

It is always great to see a true humble hero getting the recognition that he/she deserves. IMO it happens much too rarely. Especially these days.

I don't believe that we have fewer heroes today, just much poorer leadership.

It was also a pleasure to see Sir Richard Attenborough again. While making that film, he drilled his "troops" so authentically that they became known as "Attenborough's Private Army"!

Herr Witzig certainly had a lot of bullocks to "invade" that stage filled with seasoned British Paras! I hope he was greeted with warm komraderie afterwards!

I have no doubt he was!

    Great post!

I was a fan of this series about this time but never saw this episode, Fantastic viewing. I met Pearson shortly after this after joining the parachute regiment.

When I picked up my first posting to Aldershot in 1991 a couple of blokes in my chain of command had been with 1PARA and had taken part in the jump scene in A Bridge Too Far.
We also used to have the fuselage of one of the Horsa Gliders used in the movie sat in the drill shed by the main gate of Browning Barracks when the AB museum was still there...............wish I'd had a few ally phots taken

I go out to Arnhem every year for the September commemorations and it's sad to see how few 'originals" are left from 1944.

I was capbadged REME for 24 years and so had close contact with the REME Arnhem veterans......two of which have passed away in the last year alone.....Ron Jordan (Armourer) and my good friend Joe Roberts (Clerk)......RIP.. Airborne..OUT!
