These bolts are very interesting. While the photos look totally convincing and there is rust and grunge and dirt just as you like to see, I can't help but still have that tiny little doubt that the bolts are real. I know that I am a born skeptic and old habits (and beliefs) die hard, but I would love to see this one in person. I would never ask you to remove the bolts but is it possible to take a good close up picture of the nuts from the inside, and any bolt threads that show? Many thanks!

        Cheers,
        Terry

As requested , here You have the inner view of the ventilated bolts and the nuts, all made of steel (see in the pictures the dark brown colour of the oxidation).

Thanks Michele. Nice crusty rust on those nuts. I am going to assume the threads are the standard 6mm X .75 on the bolts? But I am guessing you cannot see enough of the threads to tell, so we must have faith in that. I'd still love to see this one in person. I don't suppose you will be coming to the big SOS show in Louisville in February 2014 by any chance?

              Thanks again!

              Cheers,
              Terry

Thanks for the extra photos Michele. Very helpful. I hope you don't mind the questions, as they are intended in the spirit of learning.

Like Terry, when I first saw the helmet I was trying to be cautious in my comments about the style of bolts, as I have never seen any like that; as originals.

I too would like to see such an interesting discovery in person, but I know that is not really possible.

So if you can, more inside views of the nuts, etc would really be interesting.

I notice that the strap is not through the retaining leather and that the nut is the wrong way round. Nothing immediately wrong with this but does this possibly indicate that the straps and bolts were replacements as opposed to being issued to the helmet I wonder? I too have never seen vented steel bolts and all the 'books' indicate aluminium.

I appreciate your report, however, considers that the soldiers themselves sometime disassemble the helmet, then if there is something “strange” in the assembly may be due to this reason.

I remember I happened to see a FJ helmet, in which the liner was mounted “backwards”, and certainly not at the factory…

                    Thanks!
