i have seen a few minty boxed in cardboard box.

The only unissued example I felt comfortable with was in a paper wrapper, kind of a waxed paper, or so it seemed. The knife and paper may have been once within a cardboard box, but in this case there was no box. This example was a US veteran bring back.
