Certainly appears that this is the location, would bet on it. But Marco is the expert here, so awaiting his sage opinion.

    Great photo!

Yes...it is Montecassino in a shot take from the ruins of the city. We are approximately near the actual prison area.

90.Pz.Gr.Div. at the beginning of the battle...after the area was the FJR.3 Kingdom.

Such devastation. What is so amazing about that entire battle is the Allies turned to rubble the areas they wanted to attack. Absurd from a military point of view, as it favored the defenders once the bombardment was finished.

Just like the Germans in Stalingrad. Richtofens airmen did a beautiful job of demolishing the city and the Russians fortified every ruin. The allies just had WAY more explosives to play with.

The day of the bombing were about 250 FJ in the city ... and received about 1000 tons of bombs on an area of about 1 km per side. 4 tons for every soldier. The bombing killed about 100 of them.

And then, after the bombing the allies fired 196,000 artillery shells to further soften up the defenders. That too failed. General Freyberg in overall command of the allies said it best, "no other troops in the world could take that kind of punishment and continue to fight".

And Gary, some soldiers at Cassino had also fought at Stalingrad. Those soldiers agreed that the fighting at Cassino was far worse, a fact that many historians do not realize or credit.

Indeed it was. Stalingrad is a well known battle but other than bodies the Soviets were actually very poorly equipped for the majority of the battle. They were given just enough to hold on and keep the 6th Army tied up so that Zhukov could build up his forces for the big counterattack.
