    Fallschirmjager Information Needed

I'm searching for information about my father-in-law who was in 4./Fallsch. Pz. Jaeger Abt. 1. Looking for information about the unit, where it served, etc.
He survived the war, was never captured but passed away due to cancer at age 42 in 1963. I met my future wife shortly after his death while stationed in Germany. The family knew very little about his military service except in was in North Africa, Crete and Italy. Any information would be greatly appreciated. My wife's brother who lives in Germany was 4 years old when he died and recently has become more interested in finding out about his father's military service.
    Thanks,
    Terry

      Fallschirmjager Information Needed

I received the picture in the thread from a Fallschirmjager veteran who we contacted through a veteran's organization about 20 years ago. The photo is a little water stain from the storm surge of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. We would just like to find out more information or where to look for it.
      Thanks,
      Terry

Have you tried to get some informations at the german WASt ? They have a lot of records from that time and i found something about my Grandpa who served the whole war as a FJ.

        Give it a chance.

Hi, Make sure that in your letter to the Wast that you are a direct relative and not a historian/reseacher, provide proof if possible and expect a six month wait for a response...Hope this helps...

              Thanks Napalm,
That should not be a problem, he was my wife's father and her brother in Germany is interested in finding out more about their father's war-time service. I really appreciate the relies, thanks.

                You´re welcome, Terry!

The waiting time is indeed terrible long. I waited for 8 months til i got the info´s from the WASt. And now i´m waiting since 3 months for their answer on my request for my other Grandpa.

All the best and good luck for your research!

                  Terry,

Thanks for sharing the documents and the interest story. I concur with my colleagues it will take some time for a response from WAST. From my own experience of using WAST before the restrictions it is unlikely that any records will be held on your relative, since he was not captured and obviously not killed. Nevertheless it would still be worth a request. <O</O

With regarding to the unit history here is a brief synopsis: <O</O
                  <O></O>
                  3 Kompanie/Fallschirm-Panzer-Jäger-Abteilung der Flieger Division 7<O</O
                  <O></O>
Company formed in July 1940 in SALZWEDEL<O></O>
                  <O></O>
The company’s first mission was operation MERKUR the conquest of Crete during May 1941. Originally the company was due to be transported to Crete by sea as part of the intended second phase sea borne reinforcements. However events on the island of Crete (and at Sea) changed the company’s scheduled role. <O></O>
On the 21st May the company dropped by parachute to the West of MALEME as part of RAMCKE’s reinforcements. From my previous discussions with FJ veterans this drop was largely uneventful, except for a few unlucky individuals that landed in the MALEME Sea. The company was instrumental in the defence of the eastern edges of the MALEME airfield that evening following an unsuccessful allied attempt to retake the airstrip. <O></O>
                  <O></O>
June 1941 returned to ATHENS. <O></O>
                  <O></O>
July-August 1941 largely on leave, parades and the return to Germany. <O></O>
                  <O></O>
September-November 1941 refit and replacements (Some of the 3rd Company transferred to 2 Company)<O></O>
                  <O></O>
Early December 1941 transferred to DÖBERITZ in preparation for an intended jump mission in North Africa with II./FJR.1 (Lehr Btl.). <O></O>
                  <O></O>
Mid to late December 1941 transfer to Africa via ITALY. <O></O>
                  <O></O>
Late December 1941 to March 1942 Africa. Again some of the veterans I have spoken with mentioned this to be a largely uneventful deployment around the LYBIAN dessert. Jump mission cancelled.<O></O>
                  <O></O>
09.01.1942 in TRIPOLIS, which corresponds to the photo you have kindly provided. <O></O>

                  April 1942 SCHWERIN, GERMANY<O></O>
                  <O></O>
I believe at this point your relative transferred to the newly formed 4 Company at SCHWERIN. <O></O>

                  <O></O>
March 1945 Remnants of 1st Company transferred to Fallschirm-Panzer-Jäger-Abteilung 10 which largely surrendered to Americans in APRIL 1945. <O></O>
                  <O></O>
It is not perfect but I hope this helps <O></O>
