    SS-Ogruf. / Major d.R. Friedrich Alpers - Fallschirmtruppe service

Seeking detailed information on the wartime Luftwaffe career of SS-Obergruppenfuhrer Friedrich Alpers; of greatest interest- his service as Fallschirmjaeger. Here is what I presently have:

    [Best wishes/thanks in advance,
    ~Mike Miller]

Major der Reserve and Kommandeur of Fernaufklaerungs-Gruppe 4 (a long-range reconnaissance group formed from Gruppenfliegerstab 12 in Nikolaiev in January 1942). He commanded from its formation in 01.1942 until being succeeded by Major Kurt Magnus in October 1942. He returned to Luftwaffe service (with seniority from 1 March 1944) as Fhr. of Fallschirm-Jäger-Regiment 9 in 3.Fallschirmjäger-Division: 21 August 1944 - 3 September 1944 (when he committed suicide in U.S. captivity (shot himself at Quevy le Grand, Belgium near Mons, following capture on 1 September; lhis Adjutant, SS-Ostubaf. Franz Wurm, officially declared him as missing in area of Lille on 3 Sep. and he was not officially declared dead until 9 November 1944; this is why Alpers still appears in the 9. Nov. 1944 SS-Dienstalterliste).

    Friedrich Alpers

    Mike,
I know a veteran of FJR8 Pioneerzug, who served as part of Kampfgruppe Alpers in June 1944 near the town of Berigny in Normandy. KG Alpers arrived on the St.Lo-Bayeaux on 8th June 44, ahead of the rest of FJD3 who were suffering from lack of trucks due to the fact that they were taken to the Ostfront.
This veteran told me that Friedrich Alpers was killed in action on September 9th 1944 near Mons and is buried at the Soldatenfriedhof at Lommel.
I have a photo of him interrogating some US troops from the 2nd Division in Normandy, taken from "Der Adler" in July 1944.
    All the best

      ...

Thanks, Greg! Of course, that's at odds with the information I have but has the ring of truth given that your contact served with KG Alpers.

      Best regards,
      ~ Mike
