Enfields were the best bolt action out there, fast, 10 round detachable mag, nice pics!

although the mag is detachable, reloading is still done by standard 5 round stripper clips, the lee enfield mk.IV was the first proper rifle i was ever trained on . Iirc, the French MAS36 was considered the best bolt action rifle at the time.

I agree. A posed picture in Crete showing how fallschirmjaeger armed themselves with enemy weapons, if need be, on landing. The SMLE version of the Lee Enfield shown here was common in the Mediterranean but was generally replaced in Europe by 1944 with the Lee Enfield mk 4.

Naturally, I immediately thought of Crete. Although, I was a little unsure about the British uniform. By no means am I a British uniform expert but that does not look like a tropical outfit, surely this would be?

The germans commonly used american , british , and other countrys ... vehicles, weapons equipment, and whatever they could get at times of need. Why these photos are this way, I have no idea.

Those fotos reminds me on the famous series of colour fotos, showing paras attacking a hill at crete (one was a sniper), and the last fotos show "british" troops surrendering - but one of those is wearing 1st modell FJ-boots...?

Yes - but only in winter (not in may), and in the mountains like Lassithi or Psiloritis, and no para ever went there.

Also, the pine-trees in the background do not grow on crete!
